| WHAT WE DID LAST SUMMER
Remember how every September the teacher had you write a
composition about "What I did on my summer
vacation"? This is my tale of what Whitey, Ruth
Bergman and I did on our summer vacation. At least for
the month of July.
We attended the UCR LIFE SOCIETY SUMMER INSTITUTE
ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES PROGRAM. This program was combined
with the UCR SUMMER
ACADEMY FOR ADVANCED HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.
In addition to
taking the summer school classes of our choice, we also
participated in an intergenerational enrichment program
"Celebrating Southern
California Culture" which consisted of four
luncheons with
speakers and three field trips to the Hollywood Film
Museum, the Ce-Cert Laboratory and the Los Angeles County
Museum of Art.
Whitey and Ruth took a History class "World History
from
1500-1900", and I took a Philosophy class
"Contemporary
Moral Issues" covering abortion, discrimination,
euthanasia,
war, privacy, etc. So why did we take these classes with
high school students and college freshmen? Well, (1)we
were interested in the subjects, (2)we wanted to know
what these young people were thinking, and (3)it was
great to audit a class and write no papers and take no
exams. Several of the students, when they found out why
we were taking
classes, were amazed. Imagine, taking a class if you
didn't have to.
We all agreed this was a great experience. The teachers
were great and we learned a lot about the subjects we
studied, and we learned from and about the students. If
they're an example of generations coming up, I feel very
hopeful about the future they'll help build.
We hope they offer this opportunity next year, and that
more of you can join us.
